For Your Consideration:
This week, we have an excellent book recommendation and some thoughtful articles, podcasts, and media for your consumption!
Book Recommendations:
In "Design for Belonging: How to Build Inclusion and Collaboration in Your Communities," author Susie Wise explores creating inclusive environments and fostering collaboration by blending insights from design thinking and social psychology. Wise emphasizes belonging as a need for personal well-being and cooperation.
Wise identifies barriers to belonging, such as stereotypes, biases, and power imbalances, and highlights empathy as key to breaking down these barriers. Wise introduces "empathetic design" as a method for intentionally creating spaces that promote belonging and inclusivity by understanding and prioritizing diverse community members' needs.
Wise also emphasizes the importance of ongoing learning and adaptation in promoting inclusion and collaboration, urging readers to view designing for belonging as a continuous journey open to new perspectives and ideas. By offering a comprehensive framework, the book helps readers create spaces where everyone feels valued, respected, and connected. This was a thoughtful read, and I encourage those looking to promote more inclusive practices in their classrooms to consider this book!
